Snoop Dogg’s ability to stay at the forefront of popular culture and connect with his fans has resulted in unwavering relevance. While he’s a TV and movie star, the founder and coach of a hugely successful youth football league and a savvy adapter of new technology, Snoop Dogg remains Tha Doggfather of hip-hop. Incredibly, his music is as “doggumented” now as it was in 1992 around the launch of his timeless debut Doggystyle. In fact, a stronghold over the various social networking platforms makes him more accessible than ever. With all eyes on the skinny kingpin from Long Beach, Doggumentary is the perfect title for the man who continues to occupy the throne as the world’s most famous rapper.

Los Angeles indie pop band, Foster the People, first got together in 2009. Mark Foster, (vocals, keyboards, piano, synthesizers, guitar, programming, percussion), Mark Pontius (drums and extra percussion), and Cubbie Fink (bass and backing vocals) originally titled the band “Foster & the People,” but it was misheard as “Foster the People.” Eventually, the name stuck.

Remember the urban legend of the boy next door that played records all day, and at night kept the neighborhood up with songs of his own? He left home one day and was never heard from again. You heard he moved to the big city, lived in cheap motels, ate dollar hamburgers, worked the boulevard with ex-models, thorazine freaks, transvestites, mothers, fathers, drunks, junkies and punk rockers alike. Only, this story is no urban fairytale, its the true-life journey of American rapper Mickey Avalon has taken on his path to realize his present day success.Avalon struggled through many long, lonely, desperate nights under the dizzying city lights but made a personal vow that he would never forget the magic of things he loved the most in this world: his first fix, his first girl, and most importantly the first time he rocked a microphone.

Ryan Leslie began making music as a teenager, scored a perfect 1600 on his SATs before he was old enough to drive, and graduated from Harvard at the age of 19. He got a foothold in the music industry within four years of graduation; by the end of 2005, he had written and/or produced tracks for 702, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Carl Thomas, and New Edition, and an album of his own was completed but shelved.

A year later, he was the architect behind Cassie’s “Me&U,” a number one R&B single that also reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100; Cassie’s subsequent album, produced almost entirely by Leslie, narrowly missed the top of both the Billboard 200 and R&B/hip-hop albums charts. Leslie then recorded another album of his own, which was scheduled for a mid-2008 release date. “Diamond Girl,” its lead single, debuted on the charts earlier in the year, while successive singles “Addiction” and “How It Was Supposed to Be” also set the stage for his self-titled album, released in February 2009. Leslie followed it up quickly with Transition, issued only nine months later and inspired by a secret summertime fling.

After six years living in Barcelona, Spain, and touring Europe with a variety of groups, dynamic bass player Jefferson Rose returned to his hometown of Seattle with a mission to record an album of songs influenced by his studies of flamenco, Middle Eastern and African music, while staying true to his roots of funk and reggae.

The result is a unique new band that brings together some of the best musicians in Seattle to interpret original world music compositions, written by Rose and his band.

The Jefferson Rose Band, after a successful Kickstarter fundraising campaign to make their new album, titled “Seismic,” will release it on May 18th at the Nectar Lounge in Seattle. The core members of the group include: Andy Coe (McTuff and Skerik’s Bandalabra), Aaron Walker-Loud (Big World Breaks), Naomi Siegel (Wayne Horvitz’s Seattle Conduction Ensemble and Thione Diop’s Afro Groove), Tobi Stone (Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and Thione Diop’s Afro Groove) and Ivan Galvez (Picoso, Big World Breaks). The album and the CD release party also feature Thione and Gora Diop, mesmerizing master drummers from Senegal.

One dollar from the sale of each “Seismic” album will go directly to Seattle JazzED which provides exceptional jazz education and performance opportunities to Seattle area youth.

Thione Diop & Yeke Yeke and De Cajón together with The Jefferson Rose Band promises to get the Nectar audiences grooving, with feet and hips moving to rhythms from around the world.

A lot of electronic music DJs and producers lay claim to the “underground” mantle, but San Francisco’s Lorin Ashton, a.k.a. Bassnectar, is the real deal. For a decade, Ashton has quietly established himself as a fixture on the dance music scene, first in the Bay Area with his mind-blowing parties and mixtapes, then internationally with a series of self-released albums, 12-inchers for labels like Om and Six Degrees, and remixes for the likes of KRS-One and Spearhead. The Bassnectar sound—an indescribable mix of hard-edged breaks, head-nodding hip-hop and trippy, world groove textures—had grabbed the ear of forward-thinking DJs from James Zabiela to Rennie Pilgrem.

Now Ashton is ready to take his Bassnectar tag “above ground.” The release of the ambitious double CD Mesmerizing the Ultra announces the arrival of a full-fledged visionary, a producer who mixes progressive politics, block-rocking beats and head-expanding sounds in ways no one else has conceived of.

Independent rap superstar Tech N9ne is scheduled to make history and shatter records in 2012. The Strange Music maven is slated to headline the Hostile Takeover 2012 Tour, which will launch in March and includes 90 shows in 99 days, making it the longest tour in rap history. It will make stops in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Baltimore, Denver and Seattle, among other cities.

I started planting the seeds for this music thing to expand more than 10 years ago and to see it be recognized globally like this is a beautiful thing, says Tech N9ne, who will be joined on Hostile Takeover 2012 Tour by Machine Gun Kelly (MGK), Krizz Kaliko, Mayday, Prozak and Stevie Stone. We started Strange Music so we could make the music we wanted to make and tour like we wanted to tour. Now, to be able to make history like this is a wonderful accomplishment. The Hostile Takeover 2012 Tour will be the only domestic tour of 2012 where fans can see Tech N9ne perform.

We are inviting artists, youth, families, and the broader Seattle community to save the date and join us at Westlake Park from 9am-4pm for a day of music, live art, dance, cypher sessions, and more in the spirit of Hip Hop and creative resistance, as well as in remembrance of Trayvon Marvin, Rekia Boyd, Shaima Alawai, Rhamarley Graham, Kenneth Camberlin Sr., Wendell Allen, John T. Williams, and all those whose lives were lost to systemic and internalized white supremecy.

Nickatina’s business acumen is as sharp and honorable as his presence on stage. Nickatina’s vision as an artist has been admired by many of his peers as he is seen as one of the last Bay Area Legends who was not only present during the golden-era of Hip-Hop, but one of the few artists who has helped Hip-Hop grow and who has remained ultimately relevant with each successive album he has released.

Without saying so, Nickatina has had his finger on the pulse of what is raw, uncut and capable of capturing the mind and ears of listeners. Never one to follow or ride trends, Andre Nickatina is a rare breed of artist… one of the last original trend setters. Nickatina does not do what the people want… rather the people want to know what Dre will do next.

 JUSTICE,

The French duo formed by Gaspard Aug and Xavier de Rosnay, is the band of a whole generation.

When the two friends were still bright students in graphic design, in 2003 they made JUSTICE a place to experiment a hybrid genre between music and image, which blends pop and electronic borders, and showcases the talents of 2 fascinating passionate pop culture craftsmen, bored with hierarchy. They met Pedro Winter who had just founded his label ED BANGER RECORDS, he immediately signs them after listening to We Are Your Friends which, with its joyful and vitamin-enriched electro beats combined with exhilarating voices, became the hymn of a whole generation and one of the most important tracks of the year 2000, celebrating a reconciliation of pop music and the dancefloor. It was awarded an MTV Video Award in 2007, bringing about the famous live TV appearance with Kanye West outraged that his million $ clip was outclassed by a home-made bomb. (Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, Justice, Ed Banger and So_Me became a constant source of inspiration for Kanye and his superstar rappers colleagues. Kanye even employed So-Me as director for the video for his hit song Good Life), Jay Z will use D.A.N.C.E for his next album.

A large portion of the people involved in the “creative” side of the music business spend their entire career dedicated to the singular goal of recognition, specifically the type that gets you recognized - be it magazine covers, billboards, TV, etc. In a culture obsessed with becoming famous, what do we make of artists who chose to remain anonymous? Or, for that matter, use a jackalope as their visual representative?

This brings us to Miike Snow. Up to this point they’ve remained pretty mysterious, proving nearly impossible to find any information about, photographic or otherwise. Man? DJ? Robot? Miike Snow is a band. Swedish duo Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg are childhood friends who spent time playing in bands and working on various projects in studios throughout Gothenburg. After separate moves to Stockholm they reunited in 2000 when their paths crossed with American Andrew Wyatt to write a pop album for a someone else. The release was small, there was little distribution and an alleged large sum of money was lost in the process. The three stayed in touch and a friendship was formed and in 2007 Miike Snow was born.

Tyga’s aptly titled debut album NO INTRODUCTION is set for release this spring. The lead single “Coconut Juice” produced by SAM & Sluggo, is a track just screaming to take over radio. Tyga explains the meaning behind the unusual phrase “I don’t drink alcohol, so at parties I would just walk around with a cup mixed with whatever else I could find. When people asked what I was sipping on I would say ‘coconut juice’ because it sounded funny. So I made a song about it.”

The album also features diverse production from Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco) and Stress (Ghostface Killah, Cassidy) as well as appearances by Stump, Travis, & Lil Wayne. Ladies & Gentleman, meet the most famous unknown artist in music, someone who needs no introduction “ TYGA.

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band exploded on to the Seattle music scene in the summer of 2008. By the following spring they had signed to the influential indie label Dead Oceans, and released their first album, grabbing national attention from Spin, NME, Paste, and a host of other major publications.

The performance of their first album: a wild, unhinged, and capricious group of songs, helped earn them a reputation for putting on vastly entertaining performances. They soon embarked on tours alongside Cursive, Japandroids, Frog Eyes, and made appearances at several festivals across the US and Canada.

After two full-length albums, hundreds of shows played across North America, and a period of hibernation, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band reemerge this spring in Seattle. They will be releasing and performing several new songs, written mostly during singer/guitarist Benjamin Verdoes’ summer sabbatical in San Francisco.

Infused with the warmth and simplicity that proceeds from life’s unpredictability, their new music and line-up reflect a band that is continually pushing to reinvent itself. Far from being finished, MSHVB, it seems, may be only just beginning.

Katie White and Jules De Martino needed a name for the “unintentional band” they’d created in 2007. For the sheer fun of it, Katie (vocals, guitar and bass drum) and Jules (vocals, drums, electronics) had begun writing songs together and doing impromptu shows as a two piece. Suddenly, they were generating massive excitement at a series of house parties at Manchester’s Islington Mill, a derelict cotton mill from the Industrial Revolution converted into a thriving underground artist collective housing painters, filmmakers, writers, sculptures, musicians and more.

A native of Athens, Georgia, Barnes was inspired to form the euphoric indie pop group in the wake of a broken romance with a woman from Montreal. He signed with Bar/None Records while living in Florida, subsequently moved to Cleveland and Minneapolis in search of compatible bandmates, and finally returned home to collaborate with bassist Bryan Helium (also a member of Athens’ Elf Power) and drummer Derek Almstead.

George Clinton is one of the greatest innovators of urban based soul, rock and funk over the last forty years.

Now George has created his own label, The C Kunspyruhzy that will release George’s first studio album in ten years, followed by solo recordings by individual members of the P-Funk empire. Clinton also plans to release a collection of Parliament-Funkadelic, and P-Funk All Stars live recordings gleaned from board tapes. Called the Uncut Funk Series, the live CD’s will incorporate some of the best shows over the past thirty years and will be augmented with superior graphics and extensive liner notes. “We got four generations of fans out there who keep bugging me to get these live shows out there, and now’s the time,” George says. “I’ve seen what the Grateful Dead have been doing with their archives, as well as bands like Pearl Jam, and I figured it was time to show the world what the funk is all about.”

J Boog is a man of many influences. The singer of Samoan descent was born in Long Beach and raised in Compton, California. Growing up in the rough streets of Compton, the strong sense of tradition and culture that J Boog absorbed from his family was instrumental in his path to stay off the streets and begin a successful music career. At the age of four, after hearing his older sister playing the piano, he developed an interest and started watching her and learning about music. Soon, J was singing along to the notes & melodies he heard his sister play. A while later, she brought home a Bob Marley song book. Even at this young age, J knew Bob’s name and his music. Upon hearing his sister begin to play, something clicked inside J. He hasn’t been the same since.

DMX (Dark Man X) is a hard core rapper from the East Coast school, known for his aggressively brutal raps. DMX’s 1998 single “Get At Me Dog” was a top-40 hit that pushed him into the upper tier of popular rappers and revived the strength of the Def Jam record label. The same year his debut album It’s Dark, and Hell is Hot went to #1 on the Billboard charts. He followed that album with Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood (1999) and ...And Then There Was X (2000), both of which debuted at the no. 1 spot on the charts.

He also recorded with the Ruff Ryders, a loose conglomeration of hip-hop all-stars. DMX then veered into acting and appeared in Romeo Must Die (2000, with Jet Li), Exit Wounds (2001, with Steven Seagal) and Never Die Alone (2004, with Michael Ealy). His run-ins with the law kept him in the public eye, but in 2003 he retired from recording. In 2006 DMX (sometimes called “Dog") was in the spotlight again, with a new album (Year of the Dog, Again, on the SonyBMG label) and a reality series on the BET cable network, DMX: Soul of a Man.

“Who I am and what I do seems to vary by mod, mood, and mode of expression. I write. I act. I perform. Most of the labels that are projected onto me are seldom how I would choose to refer to myself. Yet, regardless of how much I might dodge classification, the one label that I tote freely is that of being an artist. And it is the art of self expression that has heightened my experience on this planet and fueled my understanding of love, compassion, and humanity.

I write music because I have found that I cannot relie on other artists, or the music industry to provide the release that I need from a days work, a night out, to inspire a mood, a movement, or simply explore the unsaid in ways that are important to me. I’ve sought to become self sufficient. In music I think of myself as an explorer participating in the construction of the soundscape of the new world that is being hatched out of our dreams, hope and visions of peace and harmony… that don’t necesarily mean my shit is soft though…

“Rik’s saucy, art-damaged gentleman flow is savage over Smoov’s afterparty bounce, and P himself is a nice complement on the vocals; it’s rugged but breezy smooth, experimental yet official, bugged-out but deceptively subtle.”

“But I can’t front, P Smoov got beats like a mug—his raved-up synth madness is quick to morph into some skitzo grime shit or bass-heavy screw music, with seizure-inducing chopped vocal hooks”

Deep-thinking Pontiac, MI-based MC Nashid Sulaiman (born Raland Scruggs, he converted to Islam during a prison stay for armed robbery) was first known on-stage as OneManArmy and then, eventually, One Be Lo. As OneManArmy, he was one-half of Binary Star, a duo that released the under-recognized Waterworld album in 1999.

The first One Be Lo solo album, Project F.E.T.U.S., surfaced on Subterraneous in 2003, and a second album—S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M., released through Fat Beats—came two years later. Since neither his sound nor his image are all that mainstream-friendly, he relied on tireless touring and word of mouth, something that gave him enough fan support to issue The R.E.B.I.R.T.H. in December 2007 (though the record was made more widely available to the public in early 2008).

Be Lo’s last release LABOR dropped in September 2011.

Grynch - Perspective Album Release

Local emcee Grynch is having a party to celebrate the release of his new album Perspective.

Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, 21-year-old MC Grynch first discovered Hip-Hop in elementary school when a classmate let him borrow a tape of Dr. Dre’s classic, The Chronic. From that point on, it was a wrap as he became completely immersed in Hip-Hop music and culture, listening to and studying everything from Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggystyle to Mobb Deep’s The Infamous. It wouldn’t be long before Grynch would try his hand at writing rhymes himself at the age of 10.

He spent the next few years learning his craft and released his first project, an EP titled The 7 Deadly Sins, during his senior year of high school in 2004. The project’s release was limited but it generated a buzz big enough for more than a few people to take notice of Grynch’s potential as an artist. He released his debut LP, This Is What I Do, in 2005. The album was received well within the Northwest Hip-Hop scene, with its lead single “So Free” receiving spins on both KUBE 93.3 FM and X104.5 FM.

Grynch has shared stages with a variety of national artists including Little Brother, Joe Budden, C-Rayz Walz, Mac Mall & Blue Scholars. He has also collaborated with a number of notable artists including Dogg Pound affiliate Bad Azz, Geologic of Blue Scholars, Macklemore, D.Black, Neema of Unexpected Arrival, Fatal Lucciauno & Ricky Pharoe. In addition, Grynch has been featured on numerous projects and compilations including Reigncraft Vol. 6: Gotta Do It! on which he has the opening track, “That’s Hip-Hop.” The song received spins on both KUBE 93.3 FM and KEXP 90.3 FM as well as Shade 45 on Sirius Satellite Radio.

Blue Sky Black Death are an accomplished West Coast production duo. Their sound transforms the raw into the refined through technically building layers that exceed the boundaries of any one particular musical genre.

Young God and Kingston make up the duo, and acquire additional people to help construct the synthesis of instrumental variety. Often a single track will involve a violin, cello, keyboard, and guitar mixed with live vocals and abstract samplings. Each song compiles and manipulates to make the music engage on several levels.

The production duo recently teamed up with Seattle up and comer Nacho Picasso, and fellow producer Raised By Wolves to create “For the Glory’ and “Lord Of The Fly” released only 4 months apart these two albums have received critical acclaim from Spin Magazine, Pitchfork, StereoGum, URB Magazine, Hip Hop DX, and many more.

This is the first time ever Nacho , BSBD, and Raised by Wolves will share the stage in a live performance.

At the core of the band are a handful of musicians who met at an after-school jazz program. They used to take late-night ferry rides to Manhattan to hear groups like Antibalas and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Those lessons in Afro-soul clearly struck a chord, because the 11-member Budos Band was soon bending ears with its hot sound – so much so that they were signed to Brooklyn’s Daptone Records and have since release an album titled Budos Band II. Don’t miss what promises to be an electrifying JazzFest premiere!

With eyes refocusing on the Los Angeles underground hip-hop scene, Open Mike Eagle is poised to become the latest in an illustrious line of MCs to step out of the Los Angeles underground and onto the national stage.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Open Mike cut his teeth rapping with fellow broad shoulder underground MCs before moving to Los Angeles in 2004. He has since settled in with LA’s Project Blowed, co-founding the crews Thirsty Fish and the Swim Team, while earning a rep as both an intelligent rhyme writer and a formidable battle MC.

Gifted with a facile style, knack for droll wordplay, and penchant for penning memorable hooks that recalls fellow Blowed alums Mikah-9 and Abstract Rude, Open Mike Eagle presents art rap for the mass

“Don’t Talk to the Cops! are....making punk-minded, irresistible breakbeat gold. Together they rap, strut and put on a hook-stuffed synth and beat revue. It’s soul with attitude.” - The Stranger

The new album consists of maddeningly catchy cuts that pair deceptively simple lyrics and themes with heart-attack- inducing electro-punk-hop production, showcasing the talents of djblesOne and emecks.

The Seattle Laptop Battle is back!!! On Saturday, January 28th, the LoFi Performance Gallery will host 14 of the regions hottest up and coming laptop producers inna soundclash. 3 minute rounds means lots of frantic action and audio trickery to showcase each performers talents and tracks. Judges take song development, performance, emotional impact and crowd response into consideration when deciding who gets to move on in this single elimination tournament.

Laptop Battle started back in 2003, when Kris Moon and Zach Huntting from the Fourthcity collective created the original concept of bringing people and music together. You don’t have to be an established musician, nor have high-end equipment to join; people use what means they have and create what they love. A wide variety of musical sounds are welcomed. The concept has caught on and spread from Seattle to Germany, Miami, Tokyo, New York, Italy, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, New Zealand, the UK and beyond.

The Rules:

1. Contestants can use one MIDI controller.

2. Battles are chosen randomly.

3. Battles are 3 minutes long.

4. Judges decide the outcome of battles in a single elimination style

Nipsey Hussle emerged from the streets of Los Angeles and as the first signee to the Cinematic/ Epic Records joint venture, is effectively building momentum as a rising emcee while sacrificing the only way of life he’s ever known. “I try to keep a balance with my career and who I am aside from that,” says Nipsey. “It’s kinda hard, but I try to stay the same and balance both worlds. You don’t wanna forget where you come from and at the same time, you don’t wanna miss your blessing tryna live the same lifestyle you been livin’.” All in anticipation of a fall ‘09 debut, his street singles “They Roll” and “Bullets Ain’t Got No Name,” both featuring The GAME, are lyrical proof that Nipsey Hussle is here to stay. In addition to the GAME, the album is slated to feature the likes of Snoop Dogg, Sean Kingston, Lloyd and Nipsey Hussle’s own Slauson Boyz . South Central State of Mind is a healthy dose of honesty, reality and life from an authentic perspective.

Funky drummer John Wicks is a Motown B-side aficionado and prolific session player, Jeremy Ruzumna manned the keyboards and was musical director for Macy Gray. James King backed De La Soul and bassist Joseph Karnes is a well sought after session player. Then theres Noelle Scaggs, the powerful voice behind Fitzs croons. Make no mistake, Scaggs is not just there for doo-wops and handclaps. She shimmies and flirts, she stokes the crowd and simmers them down, and she has no qualms about keeping Fitz in check. She is not just a backup singer, Fitz says, We have repartee. Onstage, were Ike and Tina.

There, on the stage, Fitz and the Tantrums are not just a band, theyre an explosion. Scaggs high steps it to the tight-as-hell rhythm section, while Fitz, cooler than cobalt, croons like the aforementioned Mr. Hall for a new generation. Its obvious that this is no tryst for the band, this is a full-blown, head-over-heels love affair.

Gabriel Teodros Album Release

To know that another world is possible, and bring it to life through music; this has always been the mission of emcee, educator and community organizer Gabriel Teodros. He made a mark with groups Abyssinian Creole and Air 2 A Bird, and reached an international audience with his critically-acclaimed solo debut ‘Lovework’, setting stages on fire all across the US, Canada, Mexico and Ethiopia.

As a curly-haired mixed kid raised in Seattle’s South End and Central District, Teodros carved his identity with and between Black music and old-school activists, Mexican & Southeast Asian gangs, First Nations community, a group of Filipino poets, a Chinese landlord, and an Ethiopian family he met one by one at the airport as they first emigrated to the United States. This is the 98118, as reported in the 2010 census, the most ethnically diverse zip code in the country. Teodros calls it “a berbere, tapatio and wasabi mix… we’re making injera, and there’s some kim-chee in the fridge.”

A reflection of this neighborhood, Teodros has never been content with one style, genre or label. His music is rooted in a quest to become his idea of a whole human, embracing every vulnerable, complicated, aspect of what makes us strong. His newest offering, ‘Colored People’s Time Machine’ is another step closer; a personal and honest look at issues facing millions of people today. Recalling thoughts of suicide, homelessness and a home life sprinkled with alienation, loss, addictions and domestic abuse, Teodros manages to turn this pain into medicine, with grace, conviction, and a style all his own.

Culture vultures and hardcore music fans alike already know Theophilus from his self-starting music trajectory as well as from his style icon profiles in GQ, Esquire, Elle, NY Times, Complex, Fader and NME. Timez Are Weird raises the bar on everything that’s come before, moving past the comfort zone of sampledelia and oddball cover tunes into the dreamlike headspace of a globetrotting young artist blurring the lines between 80’s rap, new wave beats, freestyle noise and the snarling guitars of psychobilly surf rock.

“One of the greatest new talents to emerge on the dance scene in the last few years” - Skrufff.com

“Consistently proves himself to be one of the most peerlessly beautiful recording artists in modern dance music..” - IDJ

“One to keep a close eye on” - Fabric blog

“Haunting” - Clash magazine

“Beautiful, hypnotic techno that should be listened to by anybody with even a passing interest in intelligently geared dance music” - Electrorash blog

‘“The End of Reason,” a truly sublime beatless tour de force that recalls Philip Glass, Aphex Twin’s most serene moments and even Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3” - Resident Advisor

The facts are easy to establish: Max Cooper has more than 50 original releases, tracks and remixes under his belt, from glitchy reinterpretations of big bands like Hot Chip and Au Revoir Simone to straight dancefloor 12"s like his breakthrough “Serie” originals and remixes for names like Agoria, Dominik Eulberg, Extrawelt, Pig and Dan, Kaiserdisco and Sasha.

The approach, meanwhile, is anything but simple. A melancholy composer whose live sets can raise blisters in a club, Cooper is as comfortable writing abstract electronica as he is writing dancefloor techno 12"s . A rationalist with an otherworldly, idealistic side, Cooper is also a wildly creative musician who until recently had a day job as a sober scientist.

And he’s swung from extreme to extreme since he first took to the decks 11 years ago.

As Cooper sees it, there’s conflict, but it’s part of the music-writing process. Each side of his personality sparks ideas off the other, and what remains constant is his own unique and starkly emotional style. From his breakthrough trilogy of “Serie” releases on Traum Schallplatten - the first released in 2009 and with each track inspired by a different scientific or mathematical concept - Cooper has built a reputation for one-off originals, killer remixes and challenging DJ and live sets.

Since his first release in 2007, his back catalogue now includes two mainstream Hype Machine smashes with reworks of Hot Chip, Portishead, Peaches, FC Kahuna, Sasha and several Beatport genre top 10s, work with the visual artists Whiskas fX and Nick Cobby and an increasing number of collaborations with artists a long distance from Cooper’s dancefloor beginnings.

With his time now entirely spent writing and touring music, Cooper continues to release his own originals, with ‘The End Of Reason’ described by Resident Advisor as “a truly sublime beatless tour de force that recalls Philip Glass, Aphex Twin’s most serene moments and even Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3”, and the UK’s IDJ magazine saying that Cooper “consistently proves himself to be one of the most peerlessly beautiful recording artists in modern dance music”. Stark, emotive and original, Cooper is, according to Skrufff.com, “One of the greatest new talents to emerge on the dance scene in the last few years”.
